McLaren's name dragged deep in the mud

It makes me wonder what life at McLaren must be like these days.

Slowly, but surely their scheme to gift the championship to Hamilton and sacrifice Alonso is unraveling. They were caught cheating, as a result disqualified from the Constructor's championship and then fined $100 million. Not to mention, there name is now well and truly being dragged in every way possible, deep in to the mud.

Alonso, as a two-time champion has actually touched on one of the areas where McLaren has failed: McLaren did not grant Alonso number-1 status as they should have, because the truth of the matter is, whether anyone likes it or not, having an official number-1 and an official number-2 driver is the most effective way to run a team.

This was proved back in the Senna-Prost days as that idea failed miserably (just ask Prost), it was proved again from 1996-2006 at Ferrari, which thanks to proper organization, including its official nomination of Schumi as their number-1 driver led the team to rewrite the history books with the most successful decade any team has ever had in any form of motor sport, and it is being proved (in a negative way) at McLaren this year with Alonso and Hamilton.

As a direct result of not giving Alonso is rightly deserved number-1 status, and letting Hamilton come in and supercede him without earning his stripes, McLaren have created for them and F1 this horrible world that has already tainted the 2007 season beyond repair.

Alonso added fuel to that fire after he discovered he was set up with a less favorable fuel strategy in China, while Hamilton was not.

"I was expecting a lot more, we all were. From the outside, the team had a different image: serious, but very professional. And I arrived here after two titles; I improved the car as much as I could.

"Last year they were fighting to make it into Q3 and this year they are going to win the championship, and the truth is that the treatment has not been very good.

"It's better to be silent than to lie, that's for sure," said Alonso regarding the BS Dennis said earlier in the week. "And that's something he should do more often and I think the team would do better. Many of the scandals McLaren have been involved in off the track this year have been created by his things.

"Each one has his own philosophy, he has his, and we all understand it. I have spoken a lot with (David) Coulthard, with (Juan Pablo) Montoya, with Kimi (Raikkonen), and they have all left the team and found a lot of happiness. There must be a reason.

"He (Dennis) didn't promise me anything. You are always hearing about that so called equality in the team, but tell me what you brag about and I'll tell you what you are lacking.

"It's impossible to have equality in a Formula One team, there's always a better engine, a better lap to stop in, there's always a better option.

"I'm not saying it's not equality, because sometimes it's one driver's turn and other times it's the other's, but you always hear him talk about that or promising things, and it's not like that.

"I'm ready to do the best I can, to help the team, to have a good car and try to win races. But they ... things like what they say or do, or days like at Spa, or all the lies that they leak to the press, both British and German, to go against me. That, inside my own team...They have to do something to improve the situation."

Yup, I'd say the honeymoon is over.
