Kimi wins his 5th and Ferrari's 200th race in China
It was a race that started out wet, but ended up dry and Ferrari played out their fuel strategy to perfection as Kimi pitted at just the right moment to switch to dry weather tires. Massa was not so lucky as he pitted a couple laps earlier and was stuck with dry weather tires while the track was still a little wet. Ultimately, this cost Massa 2nd-place as he came out of his 2nd pit stop just a hair behind Alonso and couldn't get past.
Nonetheless, it was a great overall result for Ferrari and if all goes well, that much deserved 1-2 will be achieved in Brazil in two weeks time.
As mentioned, Alonso finished 2nd, Massa was 3rd, Sebastian Vettel finished an amazing 4th position running a Ferrari engine in his Toro Rosso, followed by Button in 5th, Antonio Liuzzi in another Toro Rosso-Ferrari in 6th, Heidfeld was 7th and David Coulthard rounded out the top eight in 8th.
What happened to Lewis Hamilton, you ask?
In the bonehead move of the year, Hamilton beached his McLaren in the gravel - all on his own, so the FIA cannot blame anyone else for this - driving into the pits and did not finish.
Alonso may consider this one of the "miracles" he was hoping for, but I call it poetic justice.
After the ridiculous driving in Japan behind the safety care, where Hamilton started a kind of train-wreck that ended when Vettel drove into Webber's rear-end, Vettel was punished and Hamilton was not. Later, after the now famous YouTube footage, which clearly proved Hamilton was as much to blame as Vettel, Hamilton was investigated, but not penalized. To make things seem fair, the FIA decided to reverse Vettel's punishment, but everyone knew this was done only to help Hamilton.
But, life has a way (sometimes) of balancing things out when it is deserved, and not only did Hamilton's achieve his first DNF of the season, but Vettel finished 4th with Scuderia Torro Rosso-Ferrari's first points of the season. This is something that never would have happened had Vettel's penalty not been reversed after Hamiklton's investigation.
So, now the top three drivers are separated by only 7-points. It will be difficult for Kimi to win the title even if Ferrari were to finish 1-2. The current point system has paved the way for Hamilton to possibly clinch the title even if he finishes as low as 6th, but as we just saw, anything can happen so, you never know?
It ain't over 'till it's over!
