What if?
Lewis Hamilton will have a hard time sleeping for the next few days knowing all he had to do was drive his car (safely) into the pits to get new tires in order to finish the race and possibly clinch the championship. But, instead he beached himself in the gravel allowing Kimi and Alonso to pull within 7-points of the championship lead.
But, Hamilton is not the only driver to know that pain. For Hamilton, this was just his first DNF of the season, for Kimi, there have been many.
After a solid start where Kimi won in Australia, it took him another six races before he would win again. During that span of six races and since, Kimi had one electrical problem in Spain, finished 8th in Monaco due to him hitting the wall in qualifying, thus forcing him to start 16th at a track where passing is literally impossible, and had a hydraulic problem at the European Grand Prix.
Out of a maximum 30-points in those DNF's, he only got 1-point.
Not including his DNF's, but including all of the other "bad performances", Kimi has still managed to average a finish position of about 2nd (about 7.4-points per race).
If Kimi finished close to that average in those three races, instead of just 1-point of out 30, he would have earned somewhere between 21 and 24-points out of 30. That is a minimum of 20-points more than he has now, which would give him a total of at least 120-points. At 120- points, he would have clinched the championship today in China.
Of course there is no use crying of spilt milk, but you can't help but wonder: what if?
