Kimi Wins! Kimi Wins!
Kimi and Ferrari did what they had to do: go out a kick McLaren's ass for a 1-2 victory. The rest, was up to Alonso and more-so, Hamilton. With the 1-2, Alonso's 3rd was exactly what Ferrari needed as long as Hamilton didn't finish better than 6th. As it turned out, Hamilton finished 7th, and he only has himself and his pride to blame.
At the start (as predicted by f50.com), Kimi easily passed Hamilton into 2nd place and almost made it to 1st. Almost immediately, Alonso followed Kimi and he too, passed Hamilton into 3rd. Having been passed by two drivers off the start, Hamilton was determined to get at least one position back, so he went for it. He moved along side Alonso, who had the racing line and went too deep into an upcoming corner. As a result, he went wide and off the track. When he came back on-track, he was all the back to 8th position. Soon after (and maybe due to some contact with Alonso), Hamilton slowed down dramatically unable with what appeared to be an electrical problem. The problem went away soon after, but by that time he had lost over 30-seconds and dropped down into 18th place.
It was over. There was no way, not even with all the slow-pokes in front of him that Hamilton was going to make it back to 5th or 6th. At the end, he gave it a decent shot and thanks to some other DNF's in front of him, he finished 7th. That would be 1-point too little. And that has gotta hurt.
Think of the pain knowing you had two races to clinch the championship to not only become the 2007 champion, but the only rookie in history, and the youngest driver in history to win the World Championship. Instead, 2nd position is all Hamilton got, and you know what they say about finishing 2nd: 2nd place is the 1st loser.
When looking back, the biggest rookie mistake of all will be the fact that Hamilton didn't need to be so aggressive with Alonso, and that cost him everything.
But, on much brighter notes, Massa was brilliant. Let's not forget this was an easy Ferrari 1-2. Both Kimi and Massa finished nearly a half lap up on Alonso and they lapped Hamilton. In other words, just as Alonso said in the press conference afterwards, it was "impossible to keep up".
That is race victory 201, Driver's Championship 15, and Constructor's Championship 15.
Thank you Kimi, Massa. Thank you Ferrari!
