Montezemolo one step ahead of Dennis, Whitmarsh
When questioned about these sour-grapes tactics, Dennis and Whitmarsh tried to clear things up by suggesting that just as Ferrari wanted McLaren punished for breaking the rules in Stepney-gate, they too would like BMW and Sauber punished for breaking the rules on Sunday. That their appeal has nothing to do with Ferrari who won the Brazilian Grand Prix fair and square, but rather BMW and Sauber who according to McLaren, cheated.
We all know that McLaren is just trying to be clever and that the real reason for their appeal has nothing to do with fair play, and more to do with their own selfish ends. In other words, had Hamilton been able to win the championship from 7th, there would be no appeal today. But, Luca di Montezemolo is no fool and apparently has no problem playing along, thanks to a small detail that just may take the wind out of McLaren's sails.
"In formula one, anything can happen, but as we have seen in the past in these circumstances, you remove the points of the team, not the drivers," the Italian remarked.
In other words, up yours McLaren!... because as Dennis and Whitmarsh have said, fair is fair, and if McLaren was only docked points in the constructor's standings for cheating, but not their drivers, then the FIA should treat BMW, Sauber, and their respective drivers in exactly the same way.
Bottom line: Kimi would (and will) still be Champion, and that was a pretty astute observation by the Italian, which once again puts the onus on the FIA to do the right thing.
